Choose the right measurements

Use length and width for rectangles; side or diagonal for squares; base and height, three sides, or two sides and an included angle for triangles; and radius, diameter or circumference for circles.

All lengths in a calculation must use the same unit. Area is measured in square units, while perimeter is measured in ordinary length units. For compound shapes, calculate each component separately and add or subtract areas as appropriate.
