About AbacaDigital

AbacaDigital is a free unit-conversion reference. It combines converters with formulas, worked examples and sourced explanations of why units differ, so a result comes with the reason behind it, not just a number.

The site launched in 2012 as a small collection of digital tools. In 2026 it was rebuilt around a single purpose: clear, accurate unit conversion.

What You Will Find Here

Each converter page is built around a real situation so that the units make sense. For example:

  • Why a "20-foot" shipping container is not 20 feet long
  • Whether a 20-metre Ethernet cable reaches a 54-foot office route once slack is added
  • How a month of video, music and messaging adds up to gigabytes on a mobile data plan
  • Why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB on some computers
  • Why a cyberattack contained in hours can take weeks to recover from

These examples are there to clarify the conversion, not to make a page longer. Formulas, assumptions and key figures are always given as page text, with the sources linked.

Categories

  • File size: bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and larger units, decimal and binary
  • Length: metric, imperial and specialised distance units
  • Time: seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years
  • Temperature: Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin
  • Volume: litres and US and imperial gallons
  • Weight: kilograms and pounds

Each category has a hub page that explains its units, and dedicated pages for commonly used unit pairs.

How the Calculations Work

Most units are converted by multiplying or dividing by a fixed factor. A conversion factor connects two units that measure the same quantity. Temperature scales such as Celsius and Fahrenheit need a different formula because their zero points do not match.

When one unit name has more than one meaning, the page says which one it uses. Common examples are the US and imperial gallons, the international and US survey foot, and decimal and binary digital-storage units.

Exact Values, Estimates and Rounding

Some conversions come from exact definitions:

  • 1 inch = exactly 25.4 millimetres
  • 1 foot = exactly 0.3048 metres
  • 1 hour = exactly 3,600 seconds
  • 1 international pound = exactly 0.45359237 kilograms

Others depend on conventions or conditions: calendar months differ in length, and the size of a video file depends on its quality. Where a figure is an estimate, the page says so. Long decimals may be rounded for display, which can cause a small difference if a rounded result is converted back, so keep more decimal places when precision matters.

Sources and Measurement Standards

Exact definitions and conversion factors come from recognised measurement organisations. Useful primary references include:

Other facts, such as historical dates and product specifications, are linked to their own sources on the page. A link does not mean that the organisation endorses AbacaDigital or has reviewed this site.

How Pages Are Written and Checked

[Describe your actual process in plain terms. For example: pages are researched from primary sources, every figure is recalculated before publication, and estimates are labelled. If you use AI tools to help with research or drafting, say so here and describe what a person checks, for instance: "We use AI tools to help research and draft pages. A person checks every figure and source before publication."]

Corrections and Feedback

A small error in a factor, symbol or definition can affect a result. If you notice an incorrect value, an unclear explanation or a broken link, please send us the page address and a description of the problem, and we will review it and correct the page.
