How to use the fraction calculator
Enter the whole number, numerator and denominator for each value. The whole-number field is optional, so 3/4 can be entered with only 3 as the numerator and 4 as the denominator. Choose the operation, then select Calculate.
Adding and subtracting fractions
Fractions need a common denominator before they can be added or subtracted. The calculator performs this automatically, then reduces the answer to its lowest terms. For example, 2/6 + 1/4 = 7/12.
Multiplying and dividing fractions
To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together. To divide fractions, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: keep the first fraction, change division to multiplication and flip the second fraction.
Proper, improper and mixed fractions
A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than its denominator, such as 3/4. An improper fraction has a numerator that is at least as large as the denominator, such as 7/4. A mixed number writes the same value as a whole number and a fraction: 7/4 = 1 3/4.
Negative fractions
A fraction is negative when either its numerator or denominator is negative. For a negative mixed number, use a minus sign in the whole-number field; for example, enter −1, 1 and 2 for −1 1/2.
