What is an average?

In everyday maths, average usually means the arithmetic mean: one value used to represent a set of numbers. Find it by adding all values together and dividing the total by the number of values.

Mean = sum of all values ÷ number of values

For example, the average of 2, 7, 19, 24 and 25 is 77 ÷ 5 = 15.4.

Median is the middle value once numbers are arranged in order. Mode is the value or values that appear most often. Range is the difference between the largest and smallest values. These measures can help describe a data set when an average alone does not tell the full story.

When an average can be misleading

Very high or low values can pull the mean away from what is typical. For example, if most house prices in an area are similar but one is much higher, the median may give a more representative middle value. Use the mean alongside the median, mode and range where appropriate.
